Almost every fence company prices by the linear foot, with the rate set by material and height: a 6 ft vinyl fence has a different per-foot price than a 4 ft one, and both differ from wood. Gates are flat amounts on top. Tearing out and hauling away an old fence is priced per foot too. Then the site moves the number: slope, rock, tree roots, tight access, corners and end posts, permits, and the grade of lumber or vinyl you pick.

Common questions
- How much does a fence cost per foot?
- Installed, using FenceFlow's default pricing model: residential chain link around $30/ft, wood privacy around $42/ft, vinyl $55 to $85/ft depending on height, ornamental iron $70 to $108/ft, ranch rail $18 to $26/ft. Your region, the lumber grade, slope, and access all move these numbers; a local fence company's rates are the ones that count.
- How many linear feet of fence do I need?
- Measure each side you want fenced and add them up, leaving out the house walls and any sides that stay open. A typical suburban backyard is 150 to 200 ft. If you don't want to walk it with a tape, a fence company using FenceFlow lets you draw the line on a satellite map and it measures for you.
- Are online fence estimates accurate?
- They're accurate for the part a map can see: footage times your material's per-foot rate, plus gates and removal. What they can't see is slope, rock, buried utilities, and access, so treat the number as a range and expect the installer to confirm on site.
- Do gates cost extra?
- Yes. In FenceFlow's default model a walk gate is $350 and a drive gate is $700, on top of the per-foot price. Custom widths, automation, and heavier hardware cost more.
- Does removing the old fence cost extra?
- Usually $4 to $7 per foot for tear-out and haul-away, depending on the material. It's included in the calculator as an option.
